My Review

MY RATING: 5 STARS

This series was one I came across on Kindle Unlimited one night when I had decided that the several thousand e-books on my TBR were simply not what I was looking for. (Admit it, we’ve all done this.) I was really pleasantly surprised when reading this, not only because it was the author’s debut series, but because the way in which the plot twists happened left me completely and utterly blindsided.

I loved the medical/sci-fi feel to this as well as the cult atmosphere of the Colony. I thought it was fast-paced, full of action, and intrigue which ran through the entire novel and left me wanting more. As soon as I was done with book one- The Pain Colony, I moved straight on to book two- The Rage Colony.

Being someone who lives with chronic pain, I also found that this series was, on a personal level, somewhat enlightening. I loved learning about the psychology behind pain, as well as the intricacies of genetic modification and the origami method used by the Colony to modify their colonists. I was endlessly annoyed by the character of Allison, and saddened when the cops met their inevitable demise, but was glad to see how the entire story was resolved in book two.

My one bugbear with this novel was Layla’s reaction to her second child being taken from her at birth. She seemed to not really care what happened to the baby, and that for me wasn’t a believable narrative for her character, especially after she was led to believe that she had lost her first baby only a year prior. I wondered how the hell she was up and walking around, preparing to kill someone and make her praefuro urges a reality around 24 hours after having her baby ripped from her.

Overall, a five star read with me, and I can’t wait to see what this author does next.
